The 320i does have the "sport" automatic transmission, which basically means steering wheel shift paddles. But the 318i still allows the sport mode to be selected and manual changes using the transmission selector. Otherwise there are no spec differences, as far as I am aware.
There is no 320ci with 2.0l engine. Both 320i and 320ci E46 were produced with 2.2l (2171ccm) up to 2004. diff . betwen them is, 'CI" 2 door coupe model and "I" is 4 door sedan.Although Bmw introduced new 3 series E90 2005, 320i which is equiped with 2,0l (1995ccm), and "ci" models come as 318 ( same 2.0l engine as 320i) 330 and 330cd (diesel
The main reason why I'm comparing the two engines is because I've heard that the N46 is problematic on the 320i E90. Tinuva said: They are almost identical. The only difference is that the VVT is external on the N42 and internal on the N46. Easy to spot if you open the engine bay between the two.
BMW parts for the E36 series are relatively inexpensive and can be found on the internet comparable to the price of Honda, or Toyota parts. I bought my 1998 BMW 318I in August of 2012 with 176,000

Good point. I have personally witnessed a 318i transformed into a 325i on an e46 chassis and my gosh there are so many differences from brakes, suspension, diff, engine, tranny, electronics, cluster, steering update, seats, even rear parcel shelf where rear speakers sit is different material, wiring, interior bits and pieces.

2003/2004 e46 318i N42 VS N46 VS Other variants. Back on the 318i bandwagon, I would like to understand what the difference with these engines are. I am not after spec sheets which are plastered everywhere but more peoples experience and understanding. On this forum many suggest the 318i (n42?) to be a minefield of problems.
